Privacy Policy

On-device by design. Here's exactly what stays on your device, and the one optional feature that uses the internet.

Effective Date: August 4, 2026

1. Introduction

Shutr Scout ("Shutr Scout," "we," "our," or "us") is a camera-settings app that recommends exposure and camera settings for your gear and the light you're in. Shutr Scout is operated by DP Creative LLC (d/b/a "Shutr Scout"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the app does and does not collect, how the one optional online feature works, and your choices.

The short version: The recommendation engine runs entirely on your device and works offline, no account required, and we don't collect personal information to generate your settings. Your photos and saved results stay on your device. The only time information leaves your device is if you use the optional Learn More feature, which sends your gear and scene details (not your photo, and nothing that identifies you) to our AI provider to write a plain-language explanation. We don't sell your data, show ads, or track you across apps.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Handled entirely on your device (not collected by us)

The following stay on your device and are not transmitted to us: the camera and lens you enter, your answers to the quick questions (subject, motion, lighting, priority), your light/EV readings, the settings recipes you save, and local usage counters (used, for example, to track your free Learn More uses). We do not receive this information.

2.2 Reference photos and EXIF metadata

If you choose a reference photo, the app reads it locally on your device to measure the light, using EXIF values such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focal length (and, if present, timestamp and GPS). The photo and its EXIF are processed on-device and are not uploaded to us or any third party. The recommendation is generated on your device.

2.3 Learn More (optional, the one online feature)

If you tap Learn More, the app sends only the context needed to write the explanation, your camera and lens, the scene details you selected, and the recommended settings, to our AI provider (OpenAI) through our secure backend. We do not send your photo, your EXIF or location, your name, email, or any device or advertising identifier. This information is used only to generate that explanation and composition tips.

2.4 Purchases

Shutr Scout is a one-time purchase, with an optional low-cost Learn More add-on. All purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We never receive or store your payment details.

2.5 App Store analytics (from Apple, if you opt in)

If you have enabled sharing analytics with developers in iOS, Apple provides us aggregate, non-identifying information such as crash data, iOS version, and device model. This is Apple's standard developer analytics and is not linked to your identity. We use it only to keep the app stable and compatible.

3. What We Do Not Do

  • We do not require an account, name, or email to use the app.
  • We do not show ads, use ad trackers or the advertising identifier (IDFA), or track you across other apps or websites.
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade your information.
  • The recommendation engine does not send your settings, gear, or usage to our servers.

4. Third-Party Services

4.1 OpenAI (only for Learn More)

When you use Learn More, the context described in Section 2.3 is processed by OpenAI to generate the explanation. Under OpenAI's API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train their models and is retained only briefly for abuse monitoring (generally up to 30 days) and then deleted. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

4.2 Apple (App Store / StoreKit)

Purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit. Apple handles all payment processing and may collect transaction information as described in Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not receive your payment details.

5. Data Storage & Retention

  • On your device: your saved settings, gear, and usage counters remain until you delete them in the app or delete the app.
  • Learn More requests: processed only to return your explanation; our backend does not retain the request content beyond what is needed to serve it and basic security logging. OpenAI's retention is described in Section 4.1.

6. Your Choices & Rights

  • Delete everything: removing the app deletes all Shutr Scout data stored on your device.
  • Photo access: you control which photos the app can read, in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos. A reference photo is optional, you can measure the light directly instead.
  • Keep everything on-device: simply don't use Learn More; every other feature is fully on-device.
  • Privacy laws (CCPA, GDPR, and similar): because we don't collect personal information tied to your identity, there is generally nothing for us to access, correct, or delete on our servers. If you have a question or request, email us and we'll help.

7. Children's Privacy

Shutr Scout is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us and we will address it.

8. Security

The Learn More request is sent over encrypted HTTPS through our secure backend, which authenticates requests and retains minimal data. Because nearly everything happens on your device, you keep control of your information. No system is perfectly secure; please report any concern to us.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the Effective Date above and, where required by law, notify you in the app.
